Control board a taxing topic, readers say
June 20, 2005

A sampling of Business First readers' responses to the Erie County Legislature's decision to raise the sales tax to 8.25 percent:

In my opinion, the passing of a .25 percent increase in the sales tax by the performers in the Erie County Legislature is like a vaudeville company giving the crowd one last amateur juggling act before exiting stage left and making a run for the bus before they are belted with rotten fruit.

It is a stopgap measure that will only hold off until next year another tax increase by a new company on the stage. One can only hope the public votes for a better quality cast who know how to work together for the good of county residents.
John Bray
director of public relations, D'Youville College

Leadership is crucial on the part of the legislators to foster change that will save Erie County from a control board.

County government lacks the ability to foster and create a shared vision of the future. This is due in part to a lack of open and effective communications between legislators. Erie County cannot move forward, nor can legislators help move government forward, unless county government first identifies where the county should be. A clear vision must be established so government can move together. Once a shared vision is identified the county can move forward in a direction that benefits all. It's simple leadership skills.

The county faces not only the current fiscal crisis, but will soon have to deal with the economic and psychological impact of a highly probable economic slowdown in 2006 and possible job losses at GM and the NF Air base. County government needs to act now.
Emil Everett
president, Emil K. Everett - Investment Advisor LLC

The latest action by the Erie County legislature is a predictable knee-jerk reaction to the crisis du jour. It imposes additional debt and interest payments on county residents and fails to address the difficult but inevitable task of restructuring and resizing county government. The best solution would be for a state control board to relieve this dysfunctional government of a job they're clearly incapable of performing.
Len Thornton
chief technology officer, ShoptoCook Inc.

The situation is again alarming with the legislature and select county officials indicating that today was a good "first step."

Lawmakers utilized the media to make themselves look good, justify their votes and agendas. I paid close attention and even watched the video a few times. It was apparent that each individual had personal interests in mind. "I did this" or "My opinion is ... " is disheartening. Where is the "we" and "us" that is needed to overcome the enormous odds that the people, businesses and officials of Erie County need to succeed? Where is the leadership necessary to pull us all out? Lead by example.
