Readers project impact of Hevesi report
June 13, 2005

We asked subscribers of our daily e-mail service what they thought about the impact of State Comptroller Alan Hevesi's report on Erie County finances. A sampling:

"Personally I have many reservations regarding the ability of a control board to genuinely work to cut spending and increase revenue in Erie County -- without taxing current taxpayers more. New York state is arguably one of the poorest examples and least-efficient state governments in existence. Trusting the future of Erie County to downstate politicians may not be the best thing for Erie County. That being said, we haven't been able to do much of a job ourselves. You reap what you sow."
Scott Pytlak
branch leader and associate broker, Hunt Real Estate ERA

"The Hevesi report will not spark compromise or agreement since, even though its numbers may be accurate, it was heavily laced with unnecessary political remarks/attacks. Mr. Hevesi took it upon himself to provide solutions -- namely, raising taxes -- which are for the Erie County legislature to decide. Indeed, as a Democrat making such debatable solutions public in the report, his opinion on the economic questions is inherently tainted and outside his realm as an elected accountant. Why was there no mention of lowering taxes drastically to enable long-term economic growth and subsequently increased tax revenue? The view is generally opposite his political affiliation."
David Ellerbrock
past president, Buffalo Junior Chamber

"Create a clean slate, renegotiate union contracts, right-size the government for the population, get out of the businesses that the county should not be in -- nursing homes, hospitals, golf courses."
Karen Clemens
senior market manager, IIMAK

"They now have an excuse to raise taxes. They need to further reduce costs. Hevesi tried to shift the blame for New York state's dysfunctional government to the county and blamed Giambra for holding the line on property taxes. This gives the legislature political cover to raise taxes."
Laurence Elia
vice president, Sevenson Environmental Services

"A control board must be brought on to make sure responsibility is taken by someone. Unfortunately, everyone talks about responsibility but few people take it to create a future because of self-interest."
Kurt Amico
president, Mid-City Office Furniture

"Hevesi's report was only a well narrated summary of the problem and its parts, that neither the county executive or legislature leadership could or would articulate."
Lynn Wardour
vice president of operations, Signal Construction LLC
